Conni Massing

Conni Massing (Edmonton, AB)

Conni Massing, born and raised in central Alberta, is a long-time Edmontonian with a BA (English) and MFA (Drama) from the University of Alberta. She works in a variety of genres including theatre, film, radio, and television, and has just published her first book, Roadtripping: On the Move with the Buffalo Gals.

Stage credits include the hit comedy The Myth of Summer, premiered by Alberta Theatre Projects; her commissioned adaptation of W.O. Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid, premiered by Theatre Calgary in September, 2009; Homesick, produced by Workshop West Theatre, and an adaptation of Bruce Allen Powe’s The Aberhart Summer (Citadel Theatre). Homesick and The Myth of Summer were recently published by Playwrights Canada Press.

Current theatre projects include a one-act Christmas comedy commissioned by Lunchbox Theatre, and a full-length romantic comedy Cuba Libre, recently featured as a part of Workshop West Theatre’s Springboards Festival of New Plays. She has worked as a television series story editor on The Beat, North of 60, The Adventures of Shirley Holmes, Taking it Off, and Family Restaurant. Her short film Invisible, co-written with Neil Grahn, was featured at the Edmonton International Film Festival.

Conni has done stints as a writer-in-residence at the Edmonton Public Library, Workshop West Theatre, Theatre Network, Playwrights Workshop Montreal, and the National Theatre School of Canada. She teaches playwriting and screenwriting for a variety of institutions and organizations, including the University of Alberta, FAVA, the Alberta Playwrights Network, and Red Deer College. Her writing has been recognized by AMPIA, the Academy of Cinema and Television, the Betty Mitchell Awards, and the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. A recipient of a Queen’s Jubilee Medal (for contributions to the arts), she was also honoured as one of 100 people who have made a contribution to Alberta theatre in the last one hundred years.
